After downsizing to a flat one year ago, Julie Ward missed the comfort and luxury of her own front door and garden.
The retired nurse recently moved into her new home at Bancon Homes’ prestigious The Den at Milltimber development after realising downsizing didn’t have to mean moving into a flat.
The Den’s new Larch style show home is now open to visitors, providing the opportunity to experience the Aberdeenshire housebuilder’s high specification finishes and contemporary interiors.
Julie (71) lived in a four-bedroom house with a big garden in Peterculter for 15 years before deciding it was time to move to a smaller home.
Having moved to a flat in Cults and being disappointed with the location and the lifestyle of living above other people, Julie decided to look at the new homes at The Den after passing by with a friend.
Julie said: “My friend and I were passing the development and went in to find out more, which is where I met the sales consultant Michelle. She spent a lot of time with me explaining all the details of the three-bedroom house that was being built on the current phase of the development.
“I immediately went away and put my flat on the market thinking that it’ll take a while to sell in the present market, but it sold in two weeks!”
Although there was not a like-for-like show home available to view, Julie was impressed by the plans for the detached three-bed Cairnfield style home and the high specification she had experienced in other Bancon Homes properties.
Julie added: “After experiencing living in the flat, I fell in love with the fact that it was a detached, spacious three-bedroom home.
“The luxurious finish of Bancon’s show homes are streets ahead of others I had seen and even though it wasn’t the house I was buying, I knew my home would be finished to exceptionally high standards and that I could rely on Bancon’s design.”
Julie moved into the Cairnfield style home, which features an integral garage and large open-plan living and dining room that takes you through to a thoughtfully designed kitchen and utility area.

Julie said: “At my age, I felt buying a new build would take the worry away from having to regularly maintain a property – and it definitely has taken that worry away.
“I lived in the area for 15 years so it feels like I’ve come home again but to a smaller, more manageable house. It’s just far enough out of the city to be in the countryside. I’ve got lovely views over the railway line and the hills but it’s just a 20-minute bus ride into town.”
The Den at Milltimber is situated in one of the most desirable suburbs of Aberdeen, close to shops, leisure activities and the Deeside railway line, where there are panoramic views of the River Dee.
Julie added: “I have to say that Michelle, who is in the sales office here, and Craig who is the site manager, went out of their way to help me with my move. As I’m the first to move down on this phase, all the guys who are working at the flats next door go above and beyond to help me. I can’t speak highly enough of them.
“Life is too short to be unhappy, so it’s lovely to have my own space, own garden and own front door again.”
Happily settled, Julie enjoyed her first Christmas in her new home with her two daughters, one who made the journey from Bali and the other who lives in Edinburgh with her son.
